A Love Letter to Football was back this year at Cargo Hall. In its fourth year, the fundraising event had guests from all walks of life come together to discuss their own affections in regards to the great game that is, Australian Football.
All for a good cause, raising funds and awareness for the Australian Prostate Centre, a much-needed area of support. 1 in 6 men are diagnosed with some form of prostate cancer in their lives, making events like this one an even more worthwhile cause.
Some of Melbourne’s brightest personalities turned out once again this year to share their own love letters as well as come down to South Wharf to spread the word and garner some attention for the APC.
Hosted by 3AW’s Ross Stevenson, an avid supporter of the cause since its inception, sharing anecdotes of his own experiences and a laugh with his fellow speakers. Sports author Titus O’Reilly (Demons) opened the letters with a dry approach regarding his painful relationship with the Dee’s, humorously proclaiming that, to pass down the dishonor of supporting Melbourne to the next generation, you simply have to “Marry within the faith” because as soon as theirs another option to choose from, their won’t be anyone left for the Demons.
Channel 7’s sports reporter Jackie Felgate (Cats) spoke of her dear love of footy from a young age, from not attending her school debutante, as dance practice conflicted with the boys Saturday game to literally running into her husband to be after a few at the footy.
Peter “Grubby’ Stubbs (Swans) spoke at length about the trials and tribulations one goes through as a lover of the game, particularly when your team is Sydney. But reminisced on words from his father at the footy when he as a young boy that stuck with him, “Doesn’t matter who you are, we are all equal at the footy”.
More of Melbourne’s familiar faces read their own letters throughout the day, including presenter Jo Stanley and Sandy Roberts, with Lehmo helping to auction some of the great prizes donated to help fund the APC.
Overall the afternoon was a great success for the fourth year running, with the Showtime Event Group team looking forward to A Love Letter to Football 5!
A big thank you to the various sponsors of the event.
