Whilst there are some of us that have added a few ISO kilos, one of the team is inspiring us all – riding over 2,000 kilometres in the last 4 months.
“Having jumped on the bike for the first time in years back in March when we took part in the corporate triathlon and with Covid-19 upon us I had a great amount of spare time on my hands, so I impulsively purchased a road bike and got to it. I thought it would be a great opportunity to improve my fitness whilst also getting out in the fresh air and passing the time in lock down.
"I thought it would be a great opportunity to improve my fitness . . . also getting out in the fresh air and passing the time in lock down"
To keep me motivated I downloaded Strava, and then started adding challenges each Month. In May I started with a 100 km challenge, then a 15 hour challenge. Then in June I upped it to 20 hours in 4 weeks, and 200 km for the month. In July I added another 6 challenges. Everything from hill climbs, to long rides, and clocked up almost 300 km.
The next goal is to compete in ‘Peaks Challenge’ which takes place in early March 2021, the peaks challenge takes place across the Victorian alpine, stretching 235 km and climbing over 4800 meters in a single day. It will take a lot of training over Christmas time up at falls creek, which I’m really looking forward to.
“Stage 4 lock down was a little tricky. Although it has reduced the distance I am able to ride, I am still able to get similar outcomes with different training methods. Being able to do interval training for short/sharp 1 hour sessions has allowed me to improve speed and stamina in ways I didn’t know were possible, so in a way it has been a little blessing in disguise.
The best ride I’ve done in the past few months would have to be either the Dandenong’s or king lake. Both rides are over 100 km but are well worth it once you get out of Metropolitan Melbourne the roads really open up and the views are beautiful to ride through, it really allows you to get away from the hustle of the city”.
I’m looking forward to watching the Tour de France that has starting this week. I have always been a big fan of the Tour, even when I had no interest in cycling I would stay up till the early hours and watch grown men ride bikes… weird right.”
